Summary:

A critically acclaimed fictional detective series inspired by the facts that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based the character of Sherlock Holmes on his tutor at the University of Edinburgh Dr Joseph Bell, and that Bell did occasionally do forensic work for the Edinburgh police.

The pilot - Dr Bell & Mr Doyle - provides an excellent backdrop to the dark, Victorian setting, introducing the young Doyle as a student of Dr Bell and caught up in a twisted tale of sexual obsession and murder. It is followed by an extended series of feature-length stories with Bell and Doyle investigating such gruesome subjects as a shrouded cyclist stalking a young woman, a serial killer obsessed with the occult, an Egyptian mummy that on closer inspection is revealed to be a recent murder victim and a clash between Doyle, Bell and an old police rival over the murder of two men with knowledge of an apparent suicide.

Notes:

Brilliantly dark mystery series killed off by the BBC in a fit of idiocy. Feel free to share elsewhere.
