If sources are enough, as long as you're connected to both ed2k and Kad, you're good.
You can check that in "Servers" window, where it should show:
eD2K Network
Status: Connected
Kad Network
Status: Open
eMule is not like torrents, it takes some time for the file to start downloading,
especially when you're new to it.
P.S.
Have a look at eMule's Help & Support section, in their official site.
You'll find many useful info.
Slow downloads?

Usually, unless more serious emule config issues are involved, here are a few reasons that could explain a no-DL situation while many sources are showing :
1 - The server you are connected to shows (temporarily) bad ping (> 200~)
- > The servers monitored by Peerates (for example) show pings below 150 most of the time
2 - You're DLing other episodes from this series, and for some reason, this very episode is progressing slower than others
-> Make sure you raise UL priorities for the episodes you just completed from that series, some source on this file might just have the same complaint about one of them, just like you do on one of theirs
3 - You jumped into season 3 (you already have season 1 & 2 for example), so you didn't have time to build credit with other client/sources like the others have had time to, during the release of the 2 previous seasons, so they jump you in sources queues
-> See #2
4 - You didn't properly seed previously completed episodes, hence exhausting your credit standings from potential sources, so other clients jump you in sources queues
-> Learn to share...
This state of things used to be even worse before dynamic IPs were supported by emule, where one could wait a whole day to slowly climb in a source's queue, to find out one had to go back to the end of the line before grabbing a slot, after one was given a new IP from ISP http://tvunderground...tyle_emoticons/dark/sad.gif
This list is not exhaustive, but should give you a few lines of investigation
As a reminder, Although credit systems may vary among emule mods, they usually weigh out bilateral UL/DL ratios (with sources/clients), amounts exchanged (both ways), and time waited since last slot obtained, to grant an UL slot...
I'll just add that promoting the release (thru appropriately raising UL priorities) of episodes in relative lack of sources (that show fewer ones) generally pays on the long run : on top of ensuring the availibility of rarer episodes to the community, they'll give you an opportunity to "pay back" faster, hence maintaining decent ratio/credit standings within the community you're DLing from
Good Luck

You said that the Kad network should be open but mine is firewalled and when I checked in the firewall options emule is excluded. What should I do about it?

Kad takes a while to connect (sometimes up to a minute or two), but if it remains firewalled even after that, try clicking "Recheck Firewall" in Kad window.
It might take a while or a couple of tries, but it should do the trick (provided that your emule ports are forwarded, if you use a router).
