If you have this error: 'Windows Media Player cannot play this file. One or more codecs required to play this file could not found' or you plainly can't play a file this topic may help you:

BE AWARE: It's advised to avoid codec packs, as they usually contain a lot of bulk you really DO NOT need.
There's really only 1 (or an optional 6 depending on preference) things needed to play video files:

Players

MediaPlayerClassic (MPC) HomeCinema:
I recommend this player just for how lightweight it is and the fact it can play anything. Since it got taken over by a new developer it no longer needs anything extra.
Comes in 32bit and 64bit distrubutions.
Just download it, unpack the archive, and play your files.

MediaPlayerClassic (MPC) Old Version:
I like this player as it doesn't hijack any of the codec settings and allows you to use ffdshow which is an excellent codec filter.
Comes in 32bit and 64bit distrubutions.
To play files you'll need either ffdshow OR xvid&AC3 (plus maybe one or two extra things depending on need).

VideoLAN
This player also requires nothing extra like MPC-HC.
Supports everything in Windows (except DCCP/RTP unicast and Real only partially). Download it, install it, play files no other codec downloads required.

Decoders (Codecs)

ffdshow: video & audio decoder (decodes almost anything)
This will probably be the only thing you need in respect to codecs.
Will allow you to play XviD, x264, AAC, AC3, etc.

QuickTime Alternative and Real Alternative (optional depending on needs): allow you to play rm and mov files in MediaPlayerClassic

xvid:
If you have ffdshow you don't need this, unless you want this over ffdshow (i.e. if xvid is updated and you want the latest codec).

x264:
If you have ffdshow you don't need this, unless you want this over ffdshow (i.e. see above).
http://x264.nl

AC3filter: AC3 audio decoder
If you have ffdshow you don't need this, unless you want this over ffdshow (i.e. see above).
http://ac3filter.net

ogg sound [aka vorbis] ogg audio decoder
If you have ffdshow you don't need this, unless you want this over ffdshow (i.e. see above).
