While on a mission American astronaut Captain Tony Nelson (Larry Hagman) is forced to make an emergency landing that will forever change his life. On a deserted South Pacific island Captain Nelson happens upon a bottle containing a beautiful two-thousand-year-old female genie named Jeannie (Barbara Eden). Rescuing her from the bottle nets Tony the requisite three wishes and then some when Jeannie pledges total devotion to her new "master".
Jeannie is eager to please and uses her magic "blink of an eye" to grant her new master anything his heart desires. Back at the base Tony tries to keep his new companion's magic powers a secret. But that proves difficult given the constant presence of his bumbling best friend and fellow astronaut Captain Roger Healey (Bill Daily). And with his boss Dr. Alfred Bellows (Rorke) always nosing around Captain Nelson has his work cut out for him as he struggles to decide whether having a "Jeannie" in one's life is a blessing or a curse.
