China's Sexual Revolution

Culture, Sociopolitical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Doc Zone series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

Revolution and its sizzling Economic Revolution. But you haven't heard about its other great social upheaval - the Chinese Sexual Revolution - and like everything in that country it's happening at warp speed.

It's China's version of the 60s revolution - on steroids.

CHINA'S SEXUAL REVOLUTION is the world's first glimpse - often using secret cameras - into this forbidden new China. It's a surprising portrait of the Chinese today: the new free love generation that's left their parents in shock; the booming sex industry that's creating an HIV crisis; the new generation of career women and feminists that suddenly wants it all - while millions of men feel left out.

This long untold story goes back to the days of Chairman Mao, who made sexuality a great taboo. He ordered everyone to wear unisexual Mao suits, and forbid women from wearing sexy clothing, getting stylish haircuts, or even wearing make-up. Men and women were expected to be comrades - not lovers -
though Mao himself enjoyed an emperor's sex life, seeking virgins to retain his "youth".

China's sexual libido was bottled up for 50 years, but now it's bursting loose, with dramatic effects on marriage, personal freedom and the government itself.

The Man with the Golden Cells

Health-Medical, Science Documentary narrated by David Suzuki and published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Nature of Things series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

Molecular biology, stem cells, genomics: these are the cutting-edge fields where the controversial work is happening. In The Man with the Golden Cells, something as sci-fi as the cryogenic preservation of cell lines is just another FedEx delivery for the people who drive this industry.

The Man with the Golden Cells travels the troubling road from John Moore's case through to today's vibrant global trade of the human body: in Singapore, in Boston, in Paris, in Toronto, the very genes that make up the human body are there to be bought and sold.

School of Secrets

Biography Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Lens series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

During the 1970's, a prominent Vancouver high school initiated Quest, a one semester outdoor education program. But for teacher Tom Ellison, Quest was more than just an outdoor program. It was an opportunity to conduct his own private brand of sex education with a continuing supply of female students.

For many Quest students, massages, skinny-dipping, and sexually charged comments from teachers were simply the expected. Many students were ferociously devoted to the charismatic teacher, so Tom had his pick of girls to experience their first "love" with him. For other teachers in the school and for parents, the rumours about Quest and its three male leaders were better left alone.

School of Secrets is a story of self-redemption for those women, who after years of tormented silence, decided to come forward. This riveting documentary traces the outcome of the complaints filed to the Vancouver Sex Crimes Unit and the investigation that brought Ellison to trial in the fall of 2006. It also delves into the cautionary implications for the parents, the school and the
community that turned a deaf ear to the rumours.

School of Secrets is produced and directed by Melanie Wood and produced by Eunice Lee, of Bossy Boots Productions & Stranger Productions (Vancouver). The film was commissioned by CBC Newsworld and is a world television premiere.

Selling the Forces

Sociopolitical, War Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Our World series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------
This week on Our World, we present Brian Stewart's feature documentary about
the untold story behind the Afghanistan campaign. He explores how the Canadian
military is selling the mission and boosting public support for it, as it also
increases its political clout in Ottawa.

Brian writes: "In my reporting on the war in Afghanistan, I have often thought
it interesting that despite Canada's costly involvement there, we have seen
very little change in public attitudes towards the mission. If, two years ago,
one had forecast that dozens of Canadians would be killed in Southern
Afghanistan by 2007, with no clear success to the mission in sight, one might
have predicted a strong current of anti-war sentiment emerging by now.

While there has been widespread criticism of the government's "lack of clarity"
over Afghanistan, Canadians are today still equally divided; roughly half for
the misson, half against. Remarkably, Canadians on the whole still support the
mission more than civilians in European NATO countries do; even though we've
taken more casualties, and face tougher fighting. So what has held up this
level of support? It is, in part , because of a well-planned, but little
understood, campaign by the military itself to control our perceptions of the
conflict. In my regular "Inside the Mission" reports for the National News,
I've been stuck by the massive public relations campaign orchestrated by
Canada's top soldier General Rick Hillier. It led to my documentary
exploration of this military PR offensive, one unprecedented since the Second
World War. " The documentary was produced by Harry Schachter and edited by
Claude Panet-Raymond.

Crackdown in Burma

Culture Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Our World series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------
This week, we look at the crackdown in Burma: the tragic end of a protest
movement as a brutal regime turns its guns on its own people. And Brian
interviews a top diplomat in Afghanistan on surprising signs that the Taliban's
power may on the decline.

This week, tragedy hangs over Burma, or as it is also known, Myanmar. Gone, the
image of one hundred thousand peaceful demonstrators marching on the streets of
Rangoon, to protest against the repressive military dictatorship. For a while,
it looked like change might really be ahead for a country that has been closed
off from the rest of the world. The marches were the biggest pro democracy
protests in a generation. But military gunfire ended all that in a violent
crackdown. At first there was video footage of the shootings and the brutal
beatings. Now, the dictatorship has cut off most information coming out of the
country. Diplomats' reports and news items describe mass arrests; knocks on
doors in the middle of the night as soldiers round people up, in many cases,
brutally murdering the monks who led the protests. Reports are still sketchy
and we're still waiting to hear about the full situation in Myanmar.

The CBC's Patrick Brown is one of the few reporters who has been able to get
into the country in recent years. He has filed stories on the underground
democracy movement and on persecuted minorities there. We present two of his
reports, which give insight into the character of the military regime. In the
first report, Patrick reflects on the significance of the recent mass protests.
The second report, produced seven years ago, includes a very rare interview
with the opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi, who
has been under house arrest for eighteen years.

Here at home Canadians remain deeply divided over Afghanistan, as they try to
balance their willingness to help a devastated country with their growing alarm
about casualties and rising violence. Janice Stein, a leading authority on
conflict zones heads one of Canada's largest think tanks on foreign affairs,
the Munk Centre for International Studies. She recently returned from a
research trip to Afghanistan and has co-authored a much-anticipated book on
Canada's involvement called, "The Unexpected War" due out later this month.
Brian speaks with her about the mission and what might happen when it ends.
Last winter, when Brian was in Kabul, he interviewed Chris Alexander, the UN's
top diplomatic troubleshooter in Afghanistan. Alexander is a former Canadian
ambassador to Afghanistan and knows the country, where he still works,
extraordinarily well. He was recently in Canada, and Brian talked to him about
the rumors of peace talks in Afghanistan.

Beijing Confidential

Sociopolitical Documentary narrated by Brian Stewart and published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Our World series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

This week, we look at fascinating, complex China through the eyes of the always outspoken and penetrating writer, Jan Wong, whose life has been intertwined with that country's history since the 1970's. She talks about her search there for a woman she denounced thirty years ago when she was a Maoist and her discovery of a new China that is rich, powerful, and increasingly ambitious about its global role.

Although China is still a one party state, you'd be forgiven if you traveled there and didn't realize it had ever been run by the Communists.Cities like Beijing and Shanghai, in particular, now seem like monuments to entrepreneurialism and capitalism. The 2008 Olympics in Beijing next year, is often described as China's giant "coming out party", a celebration of its booming economy, and its transformation into a modern world power. the government there is being very careful that nothing spoil the party. So it hasn't enjoyed international media coverage of the recent scandals over toxic Chinese exports, like toys, toothpaste and food... about alarming pollution in big cities and the criticism over human rights abuses inside the country, as well as the propping up of corrupt governments like Sudan, which is supporting genocide in Darfur.

Jan Wong knows the good and bad of China. She has lived there through some of the toughest times, the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen massacre of 1989, and she's also seen the joyous leap in the 1990's of so many Chinese people toward perhaps the highest living standards in their history. She has recorded this transition in numerous best selling books, always vivid in their analysis, but also funny and with a nuanced understanding of Chinese society as it really is.

Brian was glad to sit down with her recently and hear about her latest journey to China last summer and the book she produced. Her quest this time was to find a woman she had gone to school with in Beijing in the 1970's and whom Wong had, in her youthful ideological fervour, denounced to school authorities because the girl just wanted to see the United States.Jan Wong went back thirty years later to find out what happened to her and see if she too has shared in the Chinese economic miracle...

The Putin System

Sociopolitical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

For three years, filmmakers Jean-Michel Carré and Jill Emery interviewed dozens of people to gain insight into the life and political motivations of Russia's most powerful politician, Vladimir Putin. They spoke to long-time supporters, like Putin's former schoolteacher, Vera Gurvich, to his harshest critics, like world chess champion Garry Kasparov, as well as many KGB and Kremlin insiders. What emerged is a point-of-view documentary that presents an ominous view of what Putin is willing to do to ensure Russia regains its position on the world stage.

A backroom bureaucrat in the KGB, Putin waited patiently and played by all the rules of the game in order to gain power. According to The Putin System, Putin succeeded in framing the general prosecutor, who had pried into former Russian president Boris Yeltsin's business affairs, and in 2000, Yeltsin himself named Putin as successor to the presidency.

The Putin System chronicles the remarkable life of Putin, a tough, young leader who is not afraid to make harsh decisions and holds a secret purpose-to restore the old Russia of his dreams. Since March 2000, he has orchestrated a new system: Putin turned against the oligarchy that supported him, and turned their wealth into state-run corporations designed to finance his dream of a new Soviet empire. He also re-ignited the war in Chechnya in the name of Russian sovereignty, and launched a crackdown on political opposition. In the filmmakers' view, today, the former KGB agent is more powerful than ever before, and any opponents to Putin's system are seen as the enemy.

The Putin System is directed by Jean-Michel Carré in association with Jill Emery for the French production company Les Films Grain De Sable.

A War on Science

Science, Sociopolitical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

Intelligent Design takes on Darwinism in a sleepy Pennsylvania town.

One hundred and fifty years after the publication of On the Origin of Species, an unprecedented legal battle has gripped America over an illegal attempt to teach Intelligent Design, a theory that stipulates that nature is so complicated and existence so improbable that it cannot be accounted for by the processes of evolution. It is an essentially Creationist theory which claims a legitimate challenge to Evolution. As the world's media descended on a small U.S. town, even the President took an active interest.

The trial was Kitmiller et al vs. Dover District School in Harris, Pennsylvania. At stake was the question of how life began, and a group of highly educated scientists and professors fought to prove that the world was designed by God. The plaintiffs consisted largely of parents fighting for their kids' education. The Dover District School Board, an elected body of local notorieties, became the first in the USA to demand the teaching of the controversial theory of Intelligent Design.

Since the Dover School Board's fateful decision, the town has become the battleground for the latest skirmish in the war between religion and secularism. A War on Science asks: Is the argument of the prosecution merely Creationism in disguise? Has science been committing fraud on a massive scale? And can the gaps in evolutionary theory finally be resolved?

A War on Science is produced by James Van Der Pool for the BBC.

Buying Belief

Health-Medical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC - Marketplace series in 2007 - English narration

Information
------------------------------

Meet the little bracelet that raises big questions...

You've probably seen the retail displays. You've almost certainly seen the TV
infomercials; they're everywhere. Probably you've wondered what the Q-Ray
bracelet is and what it does.

The answer is a little complicated. The Q-Ray is a crescent of metal capped
with a pair of metal beads. In the past it was marketed as a pain-relief device.
Now, it is being marketed as a way to achieve "performance," balance" and
"vitality," and also as something that will "balance the negative and positive
energy forces in your body." All this is apparently the work of "ionization,"
which is a five-dollar word for electric charge.

We took a Q-Ray to an electron microscopy lab and had it analyzed in detail.
The verdict? The thing is not ionized at all. Then Wendy Mesley sat down with
Charles Park, the president of Q-Ray Canada.

Cat Got Your Wallet

Health-Medical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC - Marketplace series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

The world of people medications is simple enough. You see your doctor, you get
a prescription, and you get the pharmacist to fill it.

It usually doesn't work that way for pets. If your dog or cat needs medication,
the vet writes the prescription and fills it too. You may be surprised to learn
that the prices vets charge for the drugs are unregulated and vary widely
across the country (and even from one neighbourhood to the next).

As Erica Johnson reports, pet owners may have choices.

Victory for Us is to See You Suffer

Sociopolitical, War Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Our World series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

This week, we present Brian's interview with writer Philip Winslow about his
controversial memoir of three years spent on the West Bank with the Israelis
and the Palestinians...and Don Murray takes us into the archives with a
documentary about the diplomats who first conceived of a state that became
Israel.

The struggle between Israelis and Palestinians over the hotly disputed land
that both regard as their own has been called famously a "Clash of Two Rights".
It has been a flashpoint for international conflict for generations.

What would it be like to work in the middle of the conflict, where Israeli
troops and Palestians cilivians meet daily on the West Bank? Someone who
learned first hand is Philip Winslow, a former United Nations relief worker.
He spent almost three years from 2001 and 2004, during the second Palestinian
intifada, trying to mediate the daily disputes at military checkpoints and
refugee camps. His job was to escort Palestinians and aid through the
checkpoints.

Winslow, who is an American, wrote a book about the experience. The book's
title is: Victory For Us is to See you Suffer: In the West Bank with the
Palestinians and the Israelis . It's a controversial look at two societies
locked in a destructive struggle. Brian met Winslow many years ago when they
were both young reporters. Winslow had a long career working as both a
television and radio foreign correspondent before becoming a relief worker.

History, as usual, is the key to understanding the conflict in the Middle East.
We also present a documentary, rich with archival footage, by the CBC's Don
Murray about how Britain's Balfour Declaration in 1917 first conceived of a
state, now called Israel, inside territory long regarded, in the Middle East,
as Palestinian.

Taking on the Taliban

War Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

It was hoped British forces would leave Afghanistan without firing a shot,
instead senior offices have described it as the heaviest fighting the British
Army has seen since the Korean War and more than 50 of their men have been
killed.

Six years after the Taliban regime fell, the south and east of the country is
in open conflict and Britain is at the heart of the fighting. Britain has
volunteered its troops for one of the most dangerous areas, Helmand, where the
countryside is in the hands of the Taliban and where the rural population
survive by growing poppies for opium.

When the BBC's Panorama first started filming in Afghanistan with The Queen's
Company of the Grenadier Guards, it was following 35 men whose duties included
being photographed by tourists outside Buckingham Palace. Six months later two
are dead and thirteen others are seriously injured.

Taking on the Taliban follows The Queens Company into numerous fire fights to
get the intimate and personal story of a small band of men facing the biggest
challenge of their lives, and in the process, capturing unprecedented footage
of the most intense fighting seen by the British Army since the Korean War.

And as the casualties mount, the film analyses through these men the cost of
the fighting, what is being achieved in Afghanistan, and whether too much is
being asked of the men on the frontline.

So, imagine this: an election's on and your local candidate comes walking up

you think the candidate knows about you? The short answer is: a lot..
probably way more than you think.

That's because gathering information -- personal information about you --
