Crusade Against the Crucifix

Culture Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The National series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

An Italian judge who refuses to have a crucifix displayed in his courtroom has
been suspended without pay. Judge Luigi Tosti, from Rimini, is appealing
against the decision and says the fascist-era law amounts to religious
discrimination.

He was given a seven-month suspended jail term in December for refusing to work
in a courtroom with a crucifix. Disputes over asserting Italy's ancient
Christian traditions have been making news in the country recently.

The obligatory display of crucifixes in Italian courtrooms and state-run
schools dates back to fascist times 80 years ago, but it is not always strictly
enforced in classrooms. The suspension of Judge Tosti marks the latest twist
in his battle with the authorities.

What do you think of Obadiah Shoher's views on the Middle East conflict? One can argue, of course, that Shoher is ultra-right, but his followers are far from being a marginal group. Also, he rejects Jewish moralistic reasoning - that's alone is highly unusual for the Israeli right. And he is very influential here in Israel. So what do you think?

uh, here's the site in question: Middle East conflict

Putin's Next Move

Biography, History, Sociopolitical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Our World series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

This week we look at Russia's president Vladimir Putin and where he's taking
his powerful, contradictory, and often unknowable country. His Party swept
parliamentary elections. Now he can write his ticket to the future. But where
does Vladimir Putin want to take Russia? We hear from two veteran
correspondents. And...in order to put the Putin era in context, we discuss
the book KHRUSHCHEV: A MAN AND HIS ERA. Brian talks with the Pulitzer prize
winning historian, William Taubman about the man who tried to humanize the
Soviet system.

This past week, Russia held parliamentary elections. President Vladimir Putin's
Party, United Russia, won easily more than 60 percent of the votes despite
allegations by European observers of irregularities. This victory is important
because Putin, by law, has to step down from power in May after serving two
terms. His future is unclear and so his Party's majority now gives him lots of
new options. The West is now looking at Russia with increasing alarm, unsure
how to interpret Putin and his ambitions. That's why we turn to two Russia
hands here at the CBC: Don Murray, based in London and Alexandra Szacka in
Moscow.

Don Murray brings valuable perspective to the question of Putin, having
reported from Russia during the exciting years of Gorbachev and Yeltsin.
Alexandra Szacka is the CBC's new reporter in Moscow. She brings to her
assignment an exciting history. She lived in Communist Poland as a child.
Her grandfather was sent to Stalin's gulag in the 1930's. And her father went
to University in provincial Russia during the Khrushchev years. She has seen
the spectrum of Soviet history within her own family. We present first a short
excerpt from her report earlier this week on the Putin victory and then hear
her thoughts on what's ahead for Russia.

Vladimir Putin is among the last generation of Russian leaders raised under
the Soviet regime. He experienced, first hand, the communist system. And his
world view was shaped, partly, by having lived in a country closed off from
the rest of the world and which saw the West as an enemy. As a leader who
often cites history, he has looked at Russia's recent past --at the leadership
of Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin--and has decided they made mistakes.
We know he's an advocate of a strong, nationalist Russia and wants to revive
its international influence.Every leader brings his own stamp to his era and
can shape history by the force of his personality. That's what historian
William Taubman believes. He won a Pulitzer prize a couple of years ago for
his insightful portrait of Nikita Khrushchev, who ran the Soviet Union in the
1960's, when Putin was a young.

Khrushchev is interesting because he represents a reformist strain in Russia.
His greatest achievement was denouncing Russia's authoritarian past and trying
to put a human face on Communism. He's credited with having paved the way for
Gorbachev and the reforms of the late 1980's.Brian met with Taubman recently
and we talked about the lessons of Khrushchev and what mark Vladimir Putin
may leave on his own era.

Pakistan on the Edge

History, Sociopolitical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Our World series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

What ghastly days these have been for Pakistan following Benazir Bhutto's
assassination! And what a grim shock for an already crisis-weary world, which
did not need more hair-raising turmoil, and even speculation about possible
civil war, in what's often called "the most dangerous place on earth".

One can scarcely imagine a more volatile mix of explosive dangers than Pakistan.
It's a nuclear power with 165 million people and a potential flashpoint for
conflicts that can affect the whole of Central Asia and the Middle East -
perhaps the whole world. So we've every right to be very concerned about what
happens next.

In this week's show, we look beyond the assassination and ask what can be done,
for in crises like this it's always wise to seek out the calm voices in a
storm; those who have a strong historical grasp of the situation and take the
long view of events. That's what we do in part two of our show in an in-depth
interview with Akbar Ahmed, a highly respected former Pakistani diplomat,
author and professor of international relations at American University in
Washington, DC.

But we start with a reminder of the high stakes involved for other nations -
Canada most definitely included - and an item Brian did for the National
immediately following the assassination.

Edge of Eden - Living with the Grizzlies

Nature Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Nature of Things series in 2006 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

This is the extraordinary story of a family reunion. In this case, the family
is made up of one man and a few bears, living in isolation in the wilderness
of Russia.

Edge of Eden: Living with the Grizzlies (formerly The Bear Man of Kamchatka)
tracks Canadian bear expert Charlie Russell as he rescues two orphaned cubs
destined for death in a squalid Russian zoo. He secrets them away to his home
in the remote wilds of the South Kamchatka peninsula, in the former Soviet
Union.

Two little cubs that know nothing about how to be a bear. Charlie becomes
their surrogate mother and shows them the lay of the land in their new home
territory, what plants to eat, how to catch fish and how to escape from
predatory male bears.

Charlie loves the bears and then lets them go. But bears are like humans û
they need their mothers. In this breathtaking hour, trouble arises when two
strange bears come back to Charlie's cabin. They're two of the cubs Charlie
thought had died û but they've returned to the only home and the only mother
they know.

In a world where 'might makes right' and aggression becomes the only way to
deal with conflicts, Charlie Russell is proving that it is possible to live
peacefully with one of the world's most feared and misunderstood creatures.

Crude

History, Nature, Science, Sociopolitical, Technology Documentary published by ABC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2007 - English narration
also known as
* Crude: The Incredible Journey of Oil

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

Crude - the incredible journey of oil, from its birth deep within our dinosaur-
inhabited past, to its ascendancy as the indispensable ingredient of modern
life.

Oil is one of the most sought after resources in the world and sweeps into
almost every part of our modern lives, yet most people have little idea of the
incredible 160 million year journey it has made to reach our gas tanks and
plastic bags. What is its history? Where does it come from? When will it run
out?

Shooting on locations around the world and using CGI animations to visualize
both science and history, Crude helps make sense of the oil-driven world we
live in. It connects the dots between geology and economy; between the past,
present and future. Crude takes a step back from the day-to-day news to offer
a fresh perspective on the amazing fluid that powers our lives.

Mr and Mrs bin Laden

Biography Documentary narrated by Lynn Alleway and published by BBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

A strange tale of love and lust straight from the newspaper headlines, Mr. &
Mrs. bin Laden tells the story of the fourth son of Osama bin Laden's
controversial marriage to a British grandmother twice his age.

It was always the most unlikely of marriages: a 51-year-old grandmother and
five-time divorcTe from Cheshire, to a 26-year-old Saudi man who already had a
wife and child himself. The fact that the man Jane Felix Browne married was
also the son of the world's most-wanted terrorist, and she is now Osama bin
Laden's daughter-in-law, made the story almost unbelievable. But the truth
about the relationship between Mrs. bin Laden and the young and severely
smitten Omar bin Laden is wonderfully elusive. After all, Jane claimed that
she knew from first glance that they would be married.

Filmmaker Lynn Alleway follows this unusual couple as they embark on a fresh
start together. Omar talks about the burden of his last name, what he thinks
about the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center and his feelings for his
father. This is the first time that a close family member of Osama bin Laden
has given an in-depth interview.

The Putin Legacy

Biography, History, Sociopolitical Documentary narrated by Brian Stewart and published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC Our World series in 2008 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

THE PUTIN LEGACY

Sunday, February 17 @ 6:30 PM ET, 3:30 PT, 7:30 PM Maritimes

As Vladimir Putin prepares to hand the Presidency of Russia to his chosen
successor we look at the controversial stamp he leaves on his country. The
program includes an interview with a vocal critic about the cautionary tale
of Mikhail Khordorkovsky, the billionaire entrepreneur who crossed Putin and
became a Siberian prisoner, and a report from our CBC correspondent Alexandra
Szacka on Putin's rewriting of the Soviet past, to suit an authoritarian
future. Also, we have an interview with CBC producer Alex Shprintsen who is
preparing a documentary about the reasons for the popularity of Putin in
Russia.

On March 2nd Russians go to the polls to choose a new President to replace
Vladimir Putin after eight years in the job. In the West, observers are
reluctant to call this an "election", so suspect is the process. The Kremlin
has put forward a candidate, Dimitri Medvedev, who will, undoubtedly become
the next President. His only real competitor, an opponent of Putin's, named
Mikhail Kazyanov, was banned from the ballot on trumped up charges. Putin
will remain powerful. He's expected to become Prime Minister. The Russian
media, largely muzzled, is cowed by the Kremlin's power moves. In the West,
leaders are shocked by this retreat from democracy, but uncertain about how
to respond.

One vocal critic, though, is a Canadian lawyer named Robert Amsterdam. He
has been tied to Russia ever since he became a lawyer for Mikhail
Khodorkovsky. He's the famous Russian tycoon who ended up in a Siberian jail,
after crossing Putin in 2003. Back then, Khodorkovsky was Russia's richest
man after buying up a huge oil company during the years of unregulated
privatization. At that time, in the early 1990'S, the government sold public
companies for cheap prices to well connected insiders. Many became instant
millionaires. Khodorkovsky was among the most influential of the new
capitalists...until he publicly criticized Putin and started supporting
opposition parties. He soon felt Putin's steel fist. Arrested for fraud
and tax evasion he has landed in a prison near Mongolia for a nine year
term. This may stretch longer.

Robert Amsterdam continues to represent Khodorkovsky, despite the setbacks.
Many ordinary Russians are unsympathetic to the tycoon, believing he made
his fortune at their expense. But Amsterdam is adament that Khodorkovsky's
fate illustrates the brutality of the Putin Regime.

Vladimir Putin's legacy will be having attempted to restore some of the
power and prestige of Russia, lost when the Soviet Union was dissolved in
the 1990's.

In that, he was successful, largely because of an oil boom that brought some
prosperity and renewed influence to an impoverished country. But Putin, a
product of former Communist and KGB networks, has clear ideas about what was
good about the past.

Unlike Boris Yeltsin before him, he did not turn his back entirely on the
Soviet era. Putin is also, it seems, not as critical of Josef Stalin and his
period in power from the 1930's to the 1950's, a time of dictatorship and
repression, but also one of nation building and a victory at War. The CBC's
Moscow correspondent, Alexandra Szacka, explores in a report on our program,
the Putin government's efforts to reappraise the Stalin era..to the horror of
many historians and survivors of the Stalinist terror.

Finally, we also have an interview with a journalist here at the CBC who has
covered Russia for many years, producer Alex Shprintsen. He's headed to
Moscow next week to work on a documentary exploring something the West has
never fully understood, the undeniable popularity of Vladimir Putin and of
many of his policies.

Devil Plays Hardball

Sociopolitical Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2008 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

"When I was a kid, and you asked me, 'what do you want to be when you grow
up?', I didn't say a heroin addictàI want to have a family someday...and a
house of my own."

If you could get one person off the street, would you? Could you? Devil Plays
Hardball is a radical interventionist documentary by Paperny Films that seeks
to answer this question. Four well-established Vancouver residents have
10-months to mentor homeless individuals from various Vancouver neighborhoods
who have the desire û but not necessarily the means û to re-enter mainstream
society. What ensues is a complicated journey that provides an up-close and
intimate look at the people most of us choose to ignore û Canada's homeless.

No End in Sight

Sociopolitical, War Documentary published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

The first film of its kind to chronicle the reasons behind Iraq's descent into
guerilla war, warlord rule, criminality and anarchy, NO END IN SIGHT is a jaw-
dropping, insider's tale of wholesale incompetence, recklessness and venality.

Based on over 200 hours of footage, the film provides a candid retelling of the
events following the fall of Baghdad in 2003 by high ranking officials such as
former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Ambassador Barbara Bodine
(in charge of Baghdad during the Spring of 2003), Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson,
former Chief of Staff to Colin Powell, and General Jay Garner (in charge of the
occupation of Iraq through May 2003), as well as Iraqi civilians, American
soldiers and prominent analysts.

NO END IN SIGHT examines the manner in which the principal errors of U.S.
policy - the use of insufficient troop levels, allowing the looting of Baghdad,
the purging of professionals from the Iraqi government and the disbanding of
the Iraqi military - largely created the insurgency and chaos that engulf Iraq
today.

Afghanistan's Opium Trail

Sociopolitical Documentary hosted by Paul Gilmore and published by CBC broadcasted as part of CBC The Passionate Eye series in 2007 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

In bleak Afghan villages, the lure of opium cultivation is clear. With no
other viable alternative for farmers and no effective law enforcement by the
Afghan police, growing poppies is the only way for locals to feed their hungry
families. It is this opium that is sold to drug barons and their envoys,
processed into heroin and then smuggled across borders.

In ever-increasing quantities, Afghanistan is flooding the world with heroin,
supplying over 90 per cent of opium to the world market. Most startling is the
effect on the country's youth, since the majority of Afghanistan's growing
number of heroin addicts are under the age of 20. It is a problem that is
further destabilizing the country by undermining tribal structures and
traditions. In this shocking documentary, Afghanistan's Opium Trail takes
viewers for a ride on the drug caravan-from cultivation, to process, to market-
and lifts the curtain on the hidden world of the drug barons

Blue Jean Confidential

Culture, History Documentary hosted by Caroly Larson and published by CBC in 2008 - English narration

Posted Image

Information
------------------------------

Blue jeans are the world's favourite fashion statement - so popular they've
become an American icon. Here's a garment that's remained hip for more than
half a century, that's thrived from World Wars to the present. Jeans have
helped define every youth movement, and every effort of older generations to
deny the passing of youth. We trace blue jean culture, from mining days to the
ranch, from the beat and hippie generations to the world's designer labels and
celebrity cachet. Is there anyone who doesn't have a pair.
